Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics - Profile

The Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics (FMI) dates back to 1961 when it became the first standalone faculty at the Paisii Hilendarski University of Plovdiv. Today, FMI is a well-established research and training centre by international standards and provides degree programs in the fields of Mathematics, Informatics and Information Technology. There are some 87 highly qualified members of the full-time academic staff, with 14 Full Professors and 28 Associate Professors, more than half have been awarded doctoral degrees - we have 5 Doctors of Science and 71 PHD holders. Many faculty members have studied, done research or have been guest lecturers at accredited universities in the USA, Japan, Africa and Europe. Our academic staff has ample experience with highly reputable international scientific events, as well as with research and education projects in joint cooperation with universities from the EU, USA, etc. FMI is involved in the exchange of students and lecturers under various academic programs with universities in Austria, England, Germany, Ireland, Spain, FYR Macedonia, Portugal, Rumania, Serbia and Montenegro, Hungary, and Finland. FMI has a Scientific Council entitled to conferring the academic rank of Associate Professor. Some of the teaching staff are members of other specialized scientific councils and subcommittees under the Higher Attestation Commission. Every year, FMI trains some 2,000 students pursuing Bachelor's or Master's degrees in various specialties under the professional streams of Mathematics, Informatics and Computer Science, and Pedagogy of Teaching ... We also offer doctoral training programs. In addition, FMI provides two postgraduate training programs leading to the qualifications of Teacher of Mathematics and Teacher of Informatics and Information Technologies, respectively. A host of other training courses are offered, e.g. for undergraduate applicants, in Computing, etc.

All streams and specialities at FMI are accredited by the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency and have been given the highest accreditation rating of "Very Good" until 2020. Further information on the degree programmes, curricula, and admissions is available on our website.

 We at FMI are very proud of our alumni who are very successful in their careers, whether in Bulgaria or elsewhere in the world. They are accredited scientists and university lecturers, heads of departments, faculties and universities. Thousands of them are wonderful teachers, school directors, experts and managers in the field of education. A large number of them are top experts in various companies on the cutting edge of informatics and information technologies, in banks and insurance companies, in business and trade, or on R&D teams. Quite some of our alumni have become politicians or officials in the local and central governments: mayors,  regional governors, members of Parliament, ambassadors, deputy-ministers, ministers, and even vice-prime ministers. Among FMI alumni there are citizens of Turkey, FYR Macedonia, Greece, Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, Iraq, Nicaragua, Jordan, Austria, and Israel.

The faculty is based in a modern university campus with a lush-green park with abundant vegetation and cozy open-air cafeterias, a canteen, an academic bookstore, up-to-date lecture halls, auditoriums, seminar rooms, and specialized libraries. FMI facilities feature 12 state of the art internetworked computer rooms with over 200 seats, multimedia, video hall, laboratory of interactive mathematics, WiFi within the building and in the courtyard, licensed software with educational and other information materials available to students and staff to use both on campus and at home.
